Gulf University Medium of Instruction Policy

Gulf University adopts the policy of a bilingual medium of instruction where Arabic and English are used for teaching the required courses.

1st year:
Throughout the first and the second semester of the first year, the university aims at developing the basics of English language acquisition through applying two English language courses, (English Development 1 and 2) with additional practical English teaching hours to support them. These include conversation classes and language laboratory hours at no extra cost. The other courses in the first year will all be taught in Arabic.

2nd year:
During the second year, major courses will be taught using both languages, Arabic and English. All the main concepts of the course, together with the required terminology will be taught in English and explained more elaborately in Arabic.

3rd year:
With the advent of the third year, three courses in each semester, together with their exams, will be taken in English.

4th & 5th year:
In the fourth year, most courses will be taught in English, and the same medium of instruction will be applied for the fifth year where Engineering faculties are concerned.

The TOEFL:

Recognizing the grave importance of English acquisition while adhering to Arabic for the basic needs of the educational process, the university undertakes to help its students to pass the TOEFL test (with the minimum score of 500) before graduation, thus enabling them to compete for better job opportunities both in the local, regional and international job markets.
Our strategy aspires to enable our graduates to continue their post-graduate studies in either language as required.
We believe that our strategy will prove to be a success simply because it means that our graduates will be able to work comfortably and confidently in Arab and International mediums alike.
